The Stop Abuse Campaign

IMG_1557

The Stop Abuse Campaign prevents Adverse Childhood Experiences through public policy and public education. The US chooses to spend huge sums of money dealing with the consequences of abuse, but the ACE research proves that abuse cannot be undone. Fortunately, a lot is known about preventing abuse. And preventing abuse is what we do at the Stop Abuse Campaign.

Today, we work with local, regional state and national organizations all of whom are dedicated to ending sexual violence.

Center Against Domestic Violence

cadv_logo

The Center began at a “speak out” in Brooklyn in 1976 where more than a hundred women told how their lives had been turned upside down by domestic violence. One thing became clear: There was no place where mothers could flee to safety with their children. In fact, it was against regulations to bring a child to the “unfit” environment of a shelter. A group of trailblazing women—domestic violence victims, survivors and advocates—set out to change all that and the Center was born.

Throughout its history and beyond, the Center Against Domestic Violence has continued to break new ground in its efforts to not only aid victims of abuse, but end the cycle of violence altogether.

Catholic Whistleblowers

WhistleBlower

Clergy sexual abuse stands as one of the darkest moments in the history of the Catholic Church. Innocent victims have been and continue to be assaulted by clergy and men and women vowed religious. The people who commit these assaults minister in the name of God. They are looked upon with reverence, trust and respect. Compounding the difficulty survivors have rebuilding their lives has been the immoral and sometimes criminal behavior of many bishops and other Church leaders as they further traumatized the victims in favor of protecting reputations and assets. Indeed, those who perpetrate these crimes often have been defended and justified, while the victims have been vilified. Some church insiders broke ranks in order to stop the sexual abuse of children and to call sexual abusers and their supervisors to accountability. Many others wanted to blow the whistle but feared repercussions. We have formed Catholic Whistleblowers as a vehicle to strengthen and to encourage all good people who in a public and vocal way desire to stand with and speak up for the victims/survivors. Our hope is that the revelation of the truth may one day foster healing and peace for all people who suffer in any way because of the Catholic clergy sexual abuse crisis.

Ms. Foundation for Women

ms_foundation_logo_detail

We start with the knowledge that our fight is not yet over. It’s true that women have come a long way since the 1970s, but for every woman who has reached the “top”, there are millions of women struggling to earn a living wage, gain access to basic health care, secure affordable child care and participate in the opportunities that should be available to every person in the U.S.

At the Ms. Foundation, we work to bring attention to the real challenges facing women, especially women of color and low-income women who are living in poverty, working paycheck to paycheck or both. We tirelessly advocate for national and statewide policy change that will address these challenges, and we support more than 100 organizations throughout the country that are working for change on a grassroots level.

Connect, Inc

We’ve created programs to prevent domestic violence that work on three levels: individual, community and systemic. We believe that to end violence against women and girls, we must challenge and transform the conditions that allow it to occu. Thus, our approach is grounded in an ongoing commitment to addressing root causes and to confronting the way intimate violence both shapes, and is shaped by systemic violence and structural oppression. We cast a bright light on the way the dynamics of power and control work to create and sustain violence, and strategize to resist and transform them.  Through our extensive activities, CONNECT empowers individuals, social service professionals and community and religious leaders with the tools and training to create a more peaceful society free of family and gender violence.

VOTF foundational goals are to support the survivors of clerical sexual abuse, to support priests of integrity, and to work for structural change within the Church to produce increased transparency, accountability, and lay involvement in decision-making

Bishop Accountability

It is a matter of public record that U.S. bishops have knowingly transferred thousands of abusive priests into unsuspecting parishes and dioceses, placing fear of “scandal” ahead of the welfare of children. The bishops themselves have apologized for what they call their “mistake,” but they say nothing about the crucial actions that constitute accountability. For true “bishop accountability” to occur, two things must happen: 1) there must be a full “account” of the bishops’ responsibility for the sexual abuse crisis, and 2) bishops who have caused the abuse of children must be “held accountable.” The “account” has so far come through the witness of survivors, through documents unearthed by law enforcement and the legal system, through depositions taken by lawyers, and through media reports. BishopAccountability.org is dedicated to consolidating and preserving that record.

Survivors for Justice

We also develop and implement programs run by experts to help educate and empower members of the community. Our aim is not only to educate people but to facilitate the creation of supportive networks within the community.

Peaceful Hearts Foundation

At Peaceful Hearts Foundation, we believe every child and survivor of childhood sexual abuse should feel safe, supported, and empowered to thrive. By raising public awareness through media engagements, community events, informational campaigns, education programs, and legislative action, we seek the elimination of childhood sexual abuse from every community.
